Ah, those Queenslanders are a fun-loving lot, especially the ones who put up signs in remote areas.
Who can explain this one?
The lack of response to this Picture Challenge is not surprising! The main surprise seems to be that if you take this road you won’t come across anything called “Surprise”, although there apparently was — or maybe still is — a property called Surprise somewhere in the vicinity. (I guess there’s a story attached to that name. Maybe the newly-married young man of many years ago brought his bride out to a patch of bone-dry, prickly-pear-infested land, and announced “Well, my darling, here’s the surprise I promised you!”, and they lived happily ever after.)
The picture was taken as I recall on the road connecting the small town of Boolba, about 50km west of St George, Queensland, to the Mitchell-St George Road. It’s nothing to do with Mount Surprise, which is near the Undara Lava Tubes north-west of Townsville. You won’t find “Surprise” in your postcode book, and even Google seems to have to try pretty hard to find any reference to Surprise Station.
Let’s move on to the next Picture Challenge. It’ll be easier.
